Maroons whip Ed. Co. to seal playoff spot
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Needing a win to seal their spot in the postseason, Robinson High School's football team left little doubt that was going to happen.

The Maroons scored the first of their seven touchdowns less than two minutes into the game and rolled to a 46-14 over visiting Edwards County in the regular-season finale at Crosby Field.

"This was one of those nights when we were definitely better than the other team," RHS head coach Tim Nolen said. "But, Edwards County played hard for the whole game and I commend them for that."

Robinson scored at least two touchdowns in the first three quarters and were never threatened by the struggling Lions.

"I'm proud of the kids because they went out and did what we set out to do," Nolen said. "We were able to get the job done and we got a lot of kids in the game, which was good."

Blake Hale opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter and the Maroons took a 7-0 lead after Geoffrey Harrison's extra point kick. With 4:17 left in the first quarter, Jason Richart broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run for a 13-0 lead.

The Maroons broke the game open in the second quarter with three touchdowns in the span of six minutes. Lucas Bell scored on a one-yard run on the first play of the period to make the score 19-0, Hale added a 27-yard touchdown run and Richart added the two-point conversion with 8:22 to play for a 27-0 lead, then Richart scored on a nine-yard run with 5:43 remaining and Harrison added another extra point to give Robinson a 34-0 advantage.

Edwards County would get on the scoreboard late in the half, when Jake Toutloff threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Darcy McLoughlan with 1:10 to go and tossed the two-point conversion pass to Jace Borowiak to close the gap to 34-8 at halftime.

Robinson would tack on two more scores in the third quarter, with Richart scoring on runs of 44 and seven yards for a 46-8 bulge.

Borowiak would score on a five-yard run for Edwards County early in the fourth to complete the scoring.

"We started the game with power football and it worked just the way we wanted to, as we had the game in hand by halftime," Nolen said.

Robinson pounded Edwards County into submission on the ground, to the tune of 420 yards rushing on 56 carries.

Richart paced RHS with 142 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just seven carries, while Hale ran nine times for 101 yards and two scores. Bell added 85 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, Cole Blankenbeker ran six times for 29 yards and Bucky Stevens ran four times for 25 yards and completed three passes for 18 yards.

Edwards County did most of their damage in the air, with Toutloff completing 21-37 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 33 yards in 15 attempts. Ethan Taylor was the leading receiver for the Lions with seven catches for 61 yards, McLoughlan netted 54 yards and a touchdown on three receptions and Borowiak caught seven passes for 35 yards and had a rushing touchdown.

With the win, Robinson (6-3) secured their spot in the Class 3A Playoffs and received the seventh-seed in an eight-team quadrant. The Maroons will play at second-seeded Benton (8-1) in the first round Saturday at 2 p.m.

"It was important to get that sixth win. These kids deserve a tip of the hat to get that done. They worked very hard to accomplish that," Nolen said. "I think we drew a good team, but one we are capable of playing with. We also have some things in our favor. No. 1, we are really healthy and No. 2, there is no way we have played our best game yet. We still can play our best game of the year and Saturday would be a great time for it. We will get back to work and strive for that perfect game."
