Robinson's wrestling team had a respectable showing against a strong field at the Rex Avery PORTA Invite in Petersburg Saturday.
The Maroons finished 12th in the 20-team field, which head coach Levi Damron believes was one of the strongest in the state.
"This tournament is probably the second best single A tournament in the state," Damron said. "Every weight class had at least one guy that is a potential or returning state placer. We had a better day than our place showed."
Robinson totaled 79 points, placing them behind the host school Petersburg PORTA, who racked up 230 points, as well as Prairie Central (181), Shelbyville (147), Argenta (132), Mt. Olive (129.5), Pittsfield (120), Hillsboro (99), Kewanee (92.5), Auburn (88.5), Monmouth (84) and Beardstown (82). Cumberland (73.5), Litchfield (72), Mid-West (69.5), Rochester (49.5), Carlinville (34), Havana (31), Deer Creek-Mackinaw (30) and Warrensburg-Latham (27) completed the field.
The Maroons were led by fourth place finishes from seniors Bennett Williams and Mitch Thacker at 152 and 160, respectively.
Williams began his day by pinning Hillsboro's Nick Pianfetti in 3:13, then edged Carlinville's Katlin Helms, 7-6. Williams was pinned by PORTA's Zach Langloss in 43 seconds in his next match, but rebounded to beat Argenta's Kyle Johnson by major decision, 11-1, before losing in the third place match to Braxton Hoenes of Beardstown by pinfall in 1:38.
Thacker opened with a pin of Kewanee's Austin Johnson in 1:15, then scored an 8-3 decision over Cumberland's Colt Brummer. Thacker was then pinned by Shelbyville's Zach Gill in 4:19, but bounced back to pin Aaron Huff of Argenta in 5:46. He then dropped a 3-1 decision to Mt. Olive's Adam Osmoe in the third-place match.
Junior Mike Smolinski also had a solid tournament, as he finished sixth at 171. Smolinski started with a pin of Havana's Andy Boyce in 1:02, but was pinned by Chase Blankenship of Litchfield in 3:50 in his next match. He then scored a 10-5 win over John Howard of Mid-West, then lost by technical fall to Prairie Central's Chase Mowery and dropped a major decision, 10-0, to Rochester's Zane Schultz in the fifth-place match.
Meanwhile, junior Koby Decker and freshman Payton Stifle each placed seventh in their respective weight classes.
At 135, Decker lost by major decision to Cumberland's Devan Henderson, 14-4 to start his day, then won three consecutive matches by pinfall to finish seventh. He beat Carlinville's Ross Albert in 1:13, Alex Pawlak of Deer Creek-Mackinaw in 25 seconds and Monmouth's Gage Hedges in 51 seconds.
Stifle lost his opening match at 103 tor Shelbyville's Buddy Holmes, 6-2, but then scored a pair of pinfall victories to finish seventh. He down Mt. Olive's Kirsten Bima in 1:17, then dispatched of Carlinville's Lukas Cottingham in 34 seconds.
Senior Walker McMillen and sophomore Zach Koontz each ended their tournaments with eighth-place finishes.
McMillen was pinned by Argenta's Daniel Ball in 1:55 at 145, but rebounded to pin Lee Scribner of Litchfield in 1:38 and Beardstown's Ashley Stoneking in 35 seconds. In the seventh place match, McMillen was pinned by Monmouth's Antonio Morales in 40 seconds.
At 112, Koontz lost his first match by pin to Prairie Central's Ben Traub in 54 seconds, but came back to pin Colton McClintock of Monmouth in 3:59 in his next match. He then pinned Marcus Hershelman of Carlinville in 51 seconds before losing a 9-3 decision to Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Alex McClure in the seventh place bout.
Three other wrestlers won at least one match for the Maroons on the day.
Ben Rardin opened with a 3-2 win over Rochester's Jake Joslin at 215 before dropping his next two matches by pinfall, Slater Stifle pinned Brad Aman of Kewanee in his first match at 140, before losing his next two contests. At 119, Austin Dart lost his first match by pinfall, then pinned Carlinville's Blake Simburger in 58 seconds, before dropping his next bout by major decision.
Colt Poettker and Joel Wise competed at 125 and 285, respectively, but both finished the day 0-2.
"We were dealing with some injuries and wrestlers being sick, and I think those guys handled the adversity pretty well," Damron said. "I use this tournament as a great way to judge where I think my guys are and what we need to do to get better come January, because Regional time is when I want my guys at their best."
