Tigers lose to Clay City, Ind., 93-49

A solid start was not enough for Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team to get back in the win column Tuesday.

The Tigers led after one quarter of their non-conference game against Clay City, Ind., but gave up 82 points over the final three periods en route to a 93-49 loss.

Hutsonville-Palestine held a 14-11 lead after the first eight minutes, but Clay City outscored the Tigers 30-20 in the second quarter to take a 41-34 lead at halftime. The Eels were able to pull away in the second half, as they outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 35-8 in the third quarter to make the score 76-42, then won the fourth quarter 17-7 to reach the final margin.

The Tigers were outshot from every spot on the floor, as Clay City made 33 field goals, including 11 three-pointers, while Hutsonville-Palestine hit just 18 baskets, although eight of them were from long distance. The Tigers were also 5-7 at the free throw line (71 percent), while Clay City hit 10-12 foul shots (83 percent).

Evan Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 19 points, four assists, one rebound and one steal, while Gary Higginbotham totaled 12 points, six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot, Kurtis Plew contributed 10 points, three rebounds, three blocked shots and one assist and Adam Pickering netted eight points, five assists, one rebound and one steal.

Four players reached double figures for Clay City, led by Nathan Owens with 20. Elliott Rogers posted 19 points, Caden Cannon scored 13 and Hunter Adams netted 11 for the Eels.

Hutsonville-Palestine also lost the junior varsity game 47-16.

Carson Adams led the Tigers with five points, while Blaize Dedrick and Rider Lawhorn each scored three.
