Tigers lose to WSS at Altamont, 71-44

One disastrous quarter prevented Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team from having a chance to rally from an early deficit Saturday.

The Tigers fell behind early, then bounced back before a four-point third quarter helped send them to a 71-44 loss to Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg at the Altamont Shootout.

Hutsonville-Palestine fell behind early, trailing 20-9 after one quarter, then rebounded by outscoring Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg 22-18 in the second quarter to pull within 38-31 at halftime. However, a disastrous third quarter saw the Tigers get outscored 22-4 to make the score 60-35 heading into the final period. The Tigers were then outscored 11-9 in the fourth quarter as well to reach the final margin.

Evan Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 11 points, while Adam Pickering also reached double digits with 10. Gary Higginbotham posted eight points, Gavin Besing and Kurtis Plew each scored six, Gavin Postlewaite netted two and Tucker Pruitt added one.

Samuel Vonderheide led Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg with 26 points, while Jordan Wittenberg also cracked double figures with 16.

In other games Saturday, Sullivan beat Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City 66-53, St. Elmo-Brownstown got past Shelbyville 56-52, Dieterich hammered Mulberry Grove 65-14, Louisville-North Clay downed Macon Meridian 79-67 and Tuscola edged Altamont 53-50.

Hutsonville-Palestine (12-13) will play host to Clay City, Ind., Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
