Panthers beat Martinsville, 43-42, for 1st win
Sports Editor

It has been a long time coming, but Oblong High School's boys' basketball team was finally able to get into the win column Tuesday night, although they didn't make it easy on themselves.

The Panthers scored their first win of the season by holding on late for a 43-42 victory at Martinsville in a Little Okaw Valley Conference contest.

The win was the first in 24 tries for the Panthers this season and snapped a 27-game overall losing streak dating back to last season.

Neither team got off to much of a start, as Martinsville held a 5-3 lead after the first quarter. Things picked up a bit in the second quarter, as Oblong outscored Martinsville 11-10 to pull within 15-14 at halftime. The Panthers then seized control in the third quarter, outscoring Martinsville 13-6 to take a 27-21 lead into the final period. Martinsville would rally in the fourth quarter and outscore OHS 21-16, but the Panthers would hold on for the narrow victory.

Only four players found the scoring column for OHS, but three of them reached double figures. Jon Littlejohn led the Panthers with 15 points, while Caleb Newman scored 13, Caleb Black posted 10 points and 15 rebounds and J.D. McPherson netted five points.

Grant Haenig led Martinsville with 27 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, but no other player scored more than seven for the Bluestreaks.

Meanwhile, Oblong lost the junior varsity game, but no other information was available by press time.
