Lady Maroons fall to Mt. Carmel, 72-42
Class 2A Newton Regional
Sports Editor

For one half, Robinson High School's girls' basketball team played about as well as they had all season.

Unfortunately for the Lady Maroons, they were not able to keep that up through all four quarters.

Robinson stayed within striking distance of Mt. Carmel into the early stages of the third quarter, but a lengthy scoring drought put the Lady Maroons in a hole they would not recover from in a 72-42 loss in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A Newton Regional.

"We gave it our all and I am proud of the girls' effort," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "But, we just ran out of gas in the second half."

After falling behind 7-0 in the first three minutes, Robinson responded with eight straight points on a three-pointer from Lucy List, a jumper from Stevee Walker and a three-pointer from Walker to take an 8-7 lead with 3:45 to play.

However, that lead would be short-lived and it would be the only one of the game for the Lady Maroons. Mt. Carmel scored the next six points to take a 13-8 lead, then List hit another three to pull RHS within 13-11 before Mt. Carmel scored five of the final six points of the period for an 18-12 lead.

Robinson trailed by as many as nine in the second quarter and was outscored 17-15 in the period for a 35-27 deficit at halftime, but a three-pointer from List to start the third quarter closed the gap to 35-30.

Unfortunately, that is as close as the Lady Maroons would get, as Mt. Carmel's Kassidy Drone scored 14 consecutive points as part of a 20-0 run by the Lady Aces to put game out of reach.

Robinson trailed 55-32 after three quarters after being outscored 20-5, then Mt. Carmel outscored RHS 17-10 in the final period, including pushing the margin to 30 points with 3:12 remaining to kick in the continuous clock due to the IHSA's mercy rule.

The Lady Maroons managed to make just 29 percent of their field goal attempts (16-56), including 10-40 from two-point range (25 percent) and 6-16 from three-point range (38 percent), along with a 4-11 effort from the free throw line (36 percent). On the other hand, Mt. Carmel hit 28-50 shots from the floor (56 percent), which included a 22-38 effort from inside the arc (58 percent) and a 6-12 performance from long distance (50 percent) as well as a 10-12 showing from the free throw line (83 percent).

List led RHS with 19 points, including 5-8 shooting from the three-point line, including four rebounds and one assist. Walker posted eight points, eight rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot, Bailey Strauch contributed eight points, four rebounds and two assists, Catie Newlin netted six points and six rebounds and Ella Florkowski added one point and three rebounds.

Drone led four players in double figures for Mt. Carmel with 23 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist, while Maya Smith totaled 18 points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal, Alli Kell posted 10 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots, two assists and one steal and Rylie Webb contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

In Monday's other first round game, ninth-seeded Lawrenceville knocked off eighth-seeded Newton 49-35.

Robinson ended its season with a 7-22 record.

"We were definitely better at the end of the year than we were at the beginning," Bopp said. "We only lose one senior, so I am already looking forward to next year."
