Robinson's Jeff Hermann ties up Tolono Unity's Nick Nosler during their semifinal match at the IHSA Class 1A Robinson Regional. Hermann went on to win the title at 145 pounds and his win in the championship match gave him 130 victories for his career, setting the new school record.
Tough competition resulted in just shy of a handful of Robinson High School wrestlers continuing their seasons over the weekend.
Robinson was host for the IHSA Class 1A Regional Friday and Saturday and the Maroons managed to get four wrestlers to qualify for this weekend's Vandalia Sectional, while finishing fifth in the team standings.
The Maroons had five wrestlers finish among the top-four in their respective weight classes, helping the Maroons total 130 points to finish in the middle of the pack in the 11-team field. Tolono Unity easily won the team title with 253 points, while Mt. Carmel (182.5), Monticello (147) and Cumberland (134.5) also finished ahead of the Maroons. Olney (107.5), Lawrenceville-Red Hill (80), Fairfield (68), Shelbyville (67.5), Effingham (47) and Carmi (31) rounded out the field.
Robinson had one regional champion, as Jeff Hermann claimed the title at 145 by winning all three of his matches. Hermann (35-4) scored an 11-4 win over Effingham's Jon Perry in the quarterfinals, then beat Tolono Unity's Nick Nosler 8-7 in the semifinals and pinned Olney's Jarrett Fuson in 44 seconds in the championship match.
Hermann also set the new school record with 130 career wins, surpassing the previous high of 129 held by Payton Stifle.
Meanwhile, another Stifle, Elliott, came in second at 120. Stifle (25-9) pinned Monticello's Aiden York in the quarterfinals and Lawrenceville-Red Hill's Hayden Frey in the semifinals before falling to Mt. Carmel's Greg Thombleson in overtime, 7-5.
Also finishing second was Austin Hargrave (24-14) at 195, as he received a bye into the semifinals, where he pinned Fairfield's Ike Downen, but then Hargrave was pinned by Tolono Unity's Cade Scott in the title bout.
The last qualifier for RHS was Nick Eby at 182, who finished third. Eby (24-8) won his opening match by pin over Shelbyville's Brayden Ruff, but was pinned by Monticello's Matt Kerr in the semifinals. Eby rebounded by pinning Fairfield's Konnor Dagg in the consolation semifinals and pinning Levi Seitzinger in the third-place match to advance.
In addition, Jared Hermann finished fourth at 138 and will serve as at alternate in the sectional. Hermann (27-15) pinned Lawrenceville-Red Hill's Nathan Blackwell in his first match, then was pinned by Tolono Unity's Peyton Holt in the quarterfinals. Hermann responded with three straight wins in the consolation bracket before being pinned in the third-place match by Monticello's Ethan O'Linc.
Also for RHS, Myles Land (30-13) went 3-2 at 285, Ethan Zakowski (20-21) went 1-2 at 106, Jordan Caballero (21-13) went 1-2 at 160, J.D. Caballero (14-14) went 1-2 at 170, Roger Cornwell III (23-10) went 1-2 at 220 and Emily McColpin (4-30) and David Staller (6-7) went 0-2 at 126 and 152, respectively.
