Lady Maroons roll past Red Hill, 47-34
Sports Editor

Conference wins had eluded Robinson High School's girls' basketball team this season, but the Lady Maroons were able to get one Thursday night.

The Lady Maroons came in with just one win over a conference opponent this season and that came against Red Hill in the Little Illini Conference Tournament. It just so happened that their opponent Thursday was Red Hill and the Lady Maroons were able to duplicate that effort, pulling away late for a 47-34 win in the LIC regular season contest.

"We got a conference win and that's what we set out to do," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "We came out and make sure we got that done tonight."

Robinson led throughout, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes, with all of their points coming courtesy of Bailey Strauch. However, Red Hill countered with a 7-2 run to make the score 8-7, only for the Lady Maroons to finish the period on a 7-0 spree thanks to a three-pointer from Lucy List and baskets from Stevee Walker and Catie Newlin to give RHS a 15-7 lead after the first eight minutes.

A layup by Adyson Littlejohn on a backdoor feed from Strauch gave the Lady Maroons a 17-7 lead just 12 seconds into the second quarter, but Red Hill outscored RHS 9-4 the rest of the period to make the score 21-16 at halftime.

Red Hill would get as close as four early in the third quarter, while Robinson led by as many as nine and outscored Red Hill 11-9 in the period to take a 32-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Maroons continued to pull away in the final period, as their lead never dipped below five, while they led by as many as 14 in the final minutes before settling for the 13-point win.

"We picked up a win in conference play and we did it short-handed," Bopp said, referencing injuries to Ella Florkowski (wrist) and Emma Bogard (concussion). "We were aggressive early with our press and that helped us build a lead, We also attacked the basket, got them in foul trouble and got to the free throw line.

Robinson held a big advantage at the charity stripe, although they did not shoot it particularly well from there. The Lady Maroons hit 16-32 foul shots (50 percent), while Red Hill made 6-13 free throws (46 percent). Robinson also shot the ball better from the floor than Red Hill did, as the Lady Maroons were 15-41 overall (37 percent), including 14-33 from two-point range (42 percent) and 1-8 from three-point range (13 percent), while the Lady Salukis hit just 13-56 attempts (23 percent), which included an 11-46 performance from inside the arc (24 percent) and a 2-10 effort from long distance.

Another area that aided the Lady Maroons was the backboards, as they outrebounded Red Hill 47-28.

Strauch led RHS with 20 points, including 12-21 at the free throw line, 10 rebounds and one assist, while List totaled 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Walker contributed nine points, 14 rebounds and one assist, Newlin posted four points, five rebounds and one steal, Littlejohn collected two points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist and Emma Goff added one point, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Cat Bowersock led Red Hill with 18 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot, while Hannah Murray posted seven points, four steals, one rebound, one assist and one blocked shot.
