Tigers thumped by Newton, 62-31

Playing tougher competition has not served Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team well recently.

The Tigers played their second consecutive Class 2A team and suffered their second straight lopsided loss Tuesday (Jan. 14), as they fell to visiting Newton, 62-31.

Hutsonville-Palestine fell behind early and never recovered, as they trailed 23-4 after one quarter, 35-12 at halftime and 55-22 after three quarters. As a result of the margin being larger than 30 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the clock ran continuously due to the IHSA's mercy rule. Hutsonville-Palestine did win the final period 9-7, but it was too little, too late.

Evan Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 22 points, three rebounds and one assist, while Gary Higginbotham posted six points, four rebounds and one assist and Kurtis Plew contributed three points, four rebounds and two steals.

Justin Zumbahlen led Newton with 17 points, including five three-pointers, while Kyle Schafer was also in double figures with 12.

Hutsonville-Palestine also lost the junior varsity game 50-13.

Gavin Besing led the Tigers with seven points, while Rider Lawhorn, Orion Christine and Cody York scored two points apiece.
