Lady Pioneers hold on to beat Cumberland, 31-27, for 4th win
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

An early lead was enough - barely - for Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team to pick up another win Thursday night (Dec. 19).

The Lady Pioneers jumped out to an early lead, then held on for dear life as they scored a 31-27 win over Cumberland to climb back over the .500 mark for the season.

Palestine-Hutsonville held Cumberland scoreless on their way to building an 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, but then the Lady Pioneers went scoreless themselves in the second quarter and clung to an 8-6 lead at halftime. Palestine-Hutsonville responded by doubling up Cumberland 8-4 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 16-10 and although Cumberland won a high-scoring fourth quarter 17-15, the Lady Pioneers were able to hang on for the win.

The Lady Pioneers did not shoot the ball particularly well from anywhere on the floor, as they made just 13-41 field goal attempts (31 percent) and misfired on all five of their three-point attempts. Palestine-Hutsonville also struggled at the free throw line, making 5-14 shots (35 percent), but Cumberland also did not fare well, making just 4-8 foul shots (50 percent).

Katie Draper led Palestine-Hutsonville with 13 points, 12 rebounds and two assists, while Halle Piper posted six points, five rebounds and two steals. Shara Coffman contributed six points, one rebound and one assist, Stephanie Rudd collected four points, 12 rebounds and two steals and Krescene Holscher tossed in two points.

No player for Cumberland reached double figures, as they were led in scoring by Josie Brown and Sage Carr with eight points apiece, while Morgan Scott netted six and Zoe Mitchell added five.

Palestine-Hutsonville (4-3) has completed the 2019 portion of its schedule. The Lady Pioneers will next play at Red Hill Jan. 6 at 6:15 p.m.
