Panthers finish winless at Cumberland
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

The opening week of the season was a rough one for Oblong High School's boys' basketball team, but slight improvements were made by the time they wrapped up play at the Cumberland Turkey Tournament.

Oblong played twice over the weekend and lost both games to finish eighth in the eight-team field. The Panthers lost to Newton Friday (Nov. 29), 7-24, then followed up with a 63-40 loss to host Cumberland in the seventh-place game (Nov. 30).

Against Newton, Oblong held a brief lead when Hayden Johnson scored the opening basket of the game at the 6:36 mark of the first period, but the Panthers would not score again in the quarter and trailed 15-2 after the first eight minutes.

Oblong picked things up offensively in the second quarter, but unfortunately so did Newton, as the Eagles outscored OHS 22-8 to make the score 37-10 at halftime. Newton then outscored Oblong 23-11 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 60-21, then with the clock running continuously in the final period due to the IHSA's 30-point mercy rule, Newton outscored Oblong 10-3 to reach the final margin.

"We are young, but that's not an excuse for this performance," OHS head coach Mike Ray said. "If you want to win, you have to compete. You have to play defense, rebound and take care of the ball. We didn't do any of those things today."

The Panthers turned the ball over 27 times to just nine for Newton, while Oblong made 9-29 field goal attempts (31 percent) and allowed Newton to shoot 49 percent from the field (28-57). Oblong was also outrebounded 30-23.

Johnson led OHS with 13 points, two rebounds and one blocked shot, while Caleb Black posted nine points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots and Caleb Newman contributed two points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

Kyle Schafer led Newton with 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot, while Jarrett Tharp netted 16 points, four steals and three rebounds.

Also on Friday, Vandalia beat Cumberland 65-54 in a consolation semifinal, while Charleston knocked off Casey-Westfield 58-52 and Dieterich edged Okaw Valley 54-50 in winner's bracket semifinals.

On Saturday, the effort was much better for the Panthers, but it still wasn't enough to find the win column.

"I was real proud of our kids today," Ray said. "We showed a huge improvement in all areas."

Oblong trailed 19-10 after one quarter and was down 35-24 at halftime, then was outscored 19-9 in the third quarter to make the score 54-33 and OHS also lost the fourth quarter 9-7 to reach the final margin.

Black led OHS with 16 points, while Johnson also reached double figures with 10, Jon Littlejohn tossed in eight and Jacob Richards scored six.

Four players reached double figures for Cumberland, led by Ross Hemmen with 15 points. Wyatt Napier was next with 12 points, followed by Brennyn Cutts with 11 and Jaxon Boldt with 10.

In the fifth-place game, Newton hammered Vandalia 63-40, Casey-Westfield downed Okaw Valley 59-45 in the third-place game and Charleston beat Dieterich 67-59 in the championship game.
