Statesmen sweep Southeastern Illinois

Two low-scoring, one-run games went the way of Lincoln Trail College's baseball team Sunday (May 4).

The Statesmen celebrated the 50th anniversary of LTC and the groundbreaking of Statesmen Park by scoring a pair of walk-off wins over Southeastern Illinois College, 1-0 and 3-2.

Game one was a pitcher's duel, as neither team scored until the bottom of the ninth inning. A pair of hit batters with one out gave the Statesmen a pair of base runners and they moved up to second and third on a fly out by Christian Bault. Bryson Bloomer then ended the game with a base hit to left, plating Roy Thurman with the winning run.

Bloomer led LTC at the plate with two singles and a run batted in, while Thurman singled twice and scored a run and Bault, Jack Gallagher and Gavin McGaughey added a base hit apiece.

Jon McGee picked up the win on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out two in three scoreless innings of relief. John Cheatwood started and went six scoreless innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out six.

In game two, LTC used some more late-inning heroics to complete the sweep.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth, when Southeastern Illinois struck for a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Statesmen rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as McGee doubled with one out, then scored on a base hit by Tanner Robins to make the score 2-1. Two batters later, Bryant Shellenbarger smacked a two-run home run to give LTC its second walk-off victory of the day and finished off the sweep in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Shellenbarger led the LTC offense with a home run, two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored, while McGee doubled and scored a run. Robins posted a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored, John Kehoe singled twice and Bault added a base hit.

Jacob Craig earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and striking out two in a scoreless inning. Dalton Laney started and went six innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out seven.
