Lady Maroons thumped by Newton, 16-1

A bad start and an even worse finish led Robinson High School's softball team to a lopsided loss Friday (May 3).

The Lady Maroons fell behind early and never recovered in a 16-1 loss at Newton in a make-up Little Illini Conference contest that was moved to Newton from Robinson due to wet field conditions at Robinson City Park.

Despite being on the road, Robinson was still the home team, but it made no difference as Newton opened the scoring with three runs in the first, then plated four runs in the second and two more in the third for a 9-0 advantage. Robinson plated a run in the bottom of the third, but would not score again. Meanwhile, Newton would explode for seven runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Jaedyn Johnson led RHS at the plate with a single and a run batted in, while Addy Paddock singled and scored a run and Marley McKee, Livia Smith, Madi Staley and Willow Hoke added a base hit apiece.

Kori Calvert was tagged with the loss on the mound after giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out one in one-plus innings of work. Makenzee Legg went the rest of the way, allowing nine runs (three earned) on eight hits, while walking three and striking out four in four innings of relief.

In a three-inning junior varsity game that followed the varsity contest, Robinson pulled out a 3-2 victory.

McKee led RHS at the plate with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Latesha Aldrich singled and drove in a run and Calvert and Katy Powell each scored a run.

Maddie Morris picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit, while walking one and striking out one in one and two-thirds innings. Hailey Dean started and gave up a hit in a scoreless inning of work, while Johnson allowed a hit and struck out one in one-third of an inning to earn the save.
