Tigers rally past Panthers for 11-9 win in LOVC Southeast slugfest
Sports Editor

Unlike the first meeting, Wednesday's county clash between Hutsonville-Palestine and Oblong's baseball team was a slugfest, but the outcome was ultimately the same as the first meeting.

Following a 10-0, no-hit win in the first meeting, the Tigers had to withstand an early onslaught from the Panthers and battle back, then eventually score late to pick up an 11-9 win in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division contest (May 1).

Hutsonville-Palestine started strong, plating three runs in the top of the first, but Oblong fired back, scoring eight times in the bottom of the first to take an 8-3 lead. The Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the second, while the Panthers added a run in the bottom of the second to make the score 9-6. Hutsonville-Palestine continued to chip away, scoring twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie the game, then pushing across two more in the top of the seventh to regain the lead and hold on for the win.

Jess Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine at the plate with a double, a single, three runs scored and a run batted in, while Kegan Cooper singled three times and scored three runs. Will Newlin singled twice, scored two runs and knocked in a run, Gary Higginbotham doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run, Brennen Burkett added a base hit and three runs batted in, Evan Newlin singled and drove in a pair of runs, Josh Sellers and Levi Beard each singled, Jebb Revalee drove in a run and Rider Lawhorn scored a run.

Higginbotham picked up the win in relief, allowing an unearned run on three hits, while walking two and striking out five in six and one-third innings. Evan Newlin started and lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on four hits and six walks.

Jonathan Littlejohn led the OHS offense with two singles, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Nate Meese singled twice, knocked in a run and scored a run. Hayden Johnson posted a base hit, three runs batted in and a run scored, Conner Potts singled and scored twice, Grant Kidwell added a base hit and a run scored and Braden Thompson and Brayton Akers each scored a run.

Garrison Powell was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out four in four innings. Meese started and went one-plus innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out two and Johnson allowed two runs on two hits, walked five and struck out two in two innings of work.
