A fast start and a strong finish led Oblong High School's softball team to a conference victory Monday (April 29).
The Lady Panthers grabbed an early lead and cruised to a 9-2 win over Martinsville in a Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division contest.
Oblong scored twice in the first to take an early lead, then plated four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead. Martinsville pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh to avoid being shut out, but it was not nearly enough.
Abbie Dart led OHS at the plate with a double, two singles, three runs scored and two runs batted in, while Nyah Laino singled twice and knocked in three runs. Aireka Burke singled twice and scored two runs, Kara Reider and Alicia Manhart posted two singles, a run batted in and a run scored apiece, Kenzi McIntosh added a base hit and a run batted in and Harley Harrison singled.
Allison Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out two in seven innings.
