Lady Statesmen split weekend games

There were highs and lows to the final weekend of the season for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team.

The Lady Statesmen scored a big victory on Senior Night Friday (March 1), but were then thumped on Saturday (March 2) by undefeated and NJCAA No. 1-ranked Wabash Valley College, 101-43, in their regular season finale.

In Friday's game, Lincoln Trail jumped on top early and built a big lead by halftime, then withstood a second-half rally from Southeastern Illinois to earn a much-needed win in Great Rivers Athletic Conference and District P play.

The lead see-sawed back-and-forth in the opening minutes and the scores was tied 10-10 before Kaitlin Adams and Olivia Bryant drilled consecutive three-pointers to give LTC a 16-10 lead that they would not relinquish.

Lincoln Trail held a 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and still led by six midway through the second quarter, but the Lady Statesmen held Southeastern Illinois scoreless for the final 5:32 of the period and put together a 10-0 run to extend their advantage to 38-22 at halftime.

Another three-pointer by Adams gave LTC its largest lead at 41-22 early in the third period, but Southeastern Illinois was able to get within eight late in the quarter and the Lady Statesmen only led by nine, 51-42, heading into the fourth quarter.

A pair of three-point plays sandwiched around a free throw by Andrea Adams drew Southeastern Illinois to within 52-48 with 7:14 remaining, but Kaitlin Adams and Jaylynn Brown knocked down two free throws apiece to push the margin back to 56-48 with 5:38 to play.

Following a three-pointer by Southeastern, LTC strung together nine straight points - including five from Alexis True - to extend the lead to 65-51 effectively put the game away with 2:26 left. Southeastern Illinois did outscore LTC 8-1 down the stretch, but it was too little, too late.

"That was a huge win for us," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "We needed to have a good start like that, because with their firepower, we knew they would make a run. Fortunately, we had a big enough lead that we were able to withstand it."

Three players - True, Olivia Bryant and Kaitlin Adams - shared scoring honors for LTC with 14 points apiece. True also contributed five rebounds, four assists and one steal, Adams collected three steals and two rebounds and Bryant netted two rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Taylor Bradley posted nine points, five rebounds and three steals, Brown totaled six points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists, Andrea Adams chipped in with three points and three rebounds, Britney Epperson totaled two points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists, Shamarrhea Young added two points, six rebounds and one steal and Emelia Bryant had two points and two rebounds.

Kyla Covington led Southeastern Illinois with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots, while Shamari Tyson posted 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist and Bre'Anna Douglas contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

On Saturday, the Lady Statesmen ran into a buzzsaw again in the form of the No. 1 team in the country.

Lincoln Trail fell behind 29-11 after one quarter, then was outscored 23-11 in the second quarter for a 52-22 halftime deficit. Despite having their best offensive quarter in the third period, the deficit continued to grow, as LTC was outscored 26-17 to make the score 78-39 heading into the final period. The Lady Statesmen were then outscored 23-4 in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.

Wabash Valley made nearly as many field goals in the game (38) as LTC scored points. Included in those 38 field goals were 13 three-pointers, LTC was outscored 39-9 from beyond the arc.

Bradley led LTC with 19 points, while Kaitlin Adams tossed in eight, Olivia Bryant scored seven, Brown netted six, Andrea Adams added two and True had one.

Of the 14 players who saw action for Wabash Valley, 12 found the scoring column, including four in double figures.

Alexis Thomas led WVC with 14 points, while Michaela White and Dazha Congleton tossed in 13 points apiece and Marie Hunter scored 11.
