Tigers go 2-2, finish 5th at Kansas
Tri-County Holiday Tournament

An up and down tournament ended on a high note for Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team.

The Tigers alternated losses and wins at the Tri-County Holiday Tournament, ending with a 2-2 record and a fifth-place finish.

After an opening-day loss to Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg Thursday (Dec. 27), Hutsonville-Palestine played much better Friday (Dec. 28), opening with a 58-30 win over Martinsville before falling short in a 45-35 loss to eventual champion Paris.

Against Martinsville, Hutsonville-Palestine jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back. The Tigers led 20-4 after one quarter and extended their advantage to 33-12 at halftime. Martinsville outscored the Tigers 12-5 in the third quarter to make the score 38-24, but Hutsonville-Palestine outscored 20-6 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Evan Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 30 points, including seven three-pointers, as he matched Martinsville's team total all by himself. He also recorded five rebounds and one steal. Gary Higginbotham posted six points and one steal, Jerry Gower netted five points and three rebounds, Will Newlin registered four points and three rebounds, Zeke Nave tossed in four points, Trent Matthews collected three points and two rebounds, Adam Pickering contributed three points and one rebound, Ruger Berry added two points and four rebounds and Jess Newlin totaled one point, three steals and two rebounds.

Grant Haenig led Martinsville with 12 points, while Vicente Herrera scored eight and Lane Ryan tossed in seven.

Against Paris, Hutsonville-Palestine trailed 17-12 after one quarter, but pulled to within two, 22-20, at halftime. Each team scored eight points in the third quarter to make the score 30-28, but Paris outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 15-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

Gower led Hutsonville-Palestine with 13 points and five rebounds, while Nave posted 10 points and seven rebounds. Evan Newlin contributed six points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, Higginbotham totaled four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and Berry netted two points.

Mason Hutchings led Paris with 13 points, while Colton Landrum also reached double figures with 12.

In other games Friday, Westville beat Chrisman 30-24 and Paris JV 42-32, Tri-County hammered Paris JV 72-34, Chrisman knocked off Tri-County 80-74 in overtime, Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg rolled past Martinsville 59-37 and Paris edged Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg 41-40.

In Saturday (Dec. 28)'s fifth place game, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead and cruised past Chrisman for a 71-55 win.

The Tigers built a 25-12 advantage after the first quarter and still maintained a 39-28 lead at halftime. Hutsonville-Palestine then outscored Chrisman 19-12 in the third quarter to make the score 58-40, while Chrisman won the fourth quarter 15-13 to reach the final margin.

Evan Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 27 points, including six three-pointers, along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Matthews posted 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Will Newlin contributed eight points and four rebounds, Higginbotham netted seven points and three rebounds, Gower totaled five points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Jess Newlin recorded four points and one rebound, Nave collected three points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots and Berry added three points and two rebounds.

Davis Hale led Chrisman with 19 points, while Dylan Bogard and Layne Smith were also in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Also on Saturday, Paris JV beat Martinsville 51-45 in the seventh place game, Windsor-Stewardson-Strasburg nipped Tri-County 55-54 in the third place game and Paris downed Westville 54-31 in the championship game.
