OPH falls to Cerro Gordo-Bement, 21-0
Sports Editor

For the third straight week, Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville's football team has been involved in a shutout.

Unfortunately, OPH has been on the wrong side of two of those, including Friday night (Sept. 7)'s 21-0 loss to Cerro Gordo-Bement in Palestine.

"You have got to put points on the board to win football games and we had trouble doing that," OPH head coach Mark Ambrose.

OPH gave up touchdown runs to CGB's Brady Greenwood in each of the first two quarters for a 14-0 halftime deficit, then Gage Taylor-Barker added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Broncos.

Meanwhile, OPH could never get their offense going, even after an early turnover gave them good field position. OPH managed just 103 yards of offense, some of which had to do with deteriorating weather conditions as the game went on. Still, OPH hung in the game largely due to their defense.

"We played better defense and our special teams were good," Ambrose said. "The rain really limited us in the second half."

Evan Newlin completed five passes for 59 yards to lead the OPH offense, with Conner Potts catching three passes for 33 yards. Levi Beard was the leading rusher with 23 yards on 10 carries.

Greenwood led Cerro Gordo-Bement with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Ethan Mann completed 8-13 passes for 104 yards and Matthew Guffey added 64 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving on four receptions.

"Cerro Gordo is no slouch and we played them pretty tough," Ambrose said. "I believe we did improve, we just struggled getting the ball in the end zone."
