The first home match of the season was a successful one for Robinson High School's girls' tennis team.
The Lady Maroons dominated visiting Paris in the first match at the Washington Park courts this season on their way to an 8-1 win (Sept. 4).
"Even with the heat, our girls came ready to play," RHS head coach Steve Jenkins said.
Robinson won five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory, then swept the doubles matches just for good measure.
In singles, Andrea Schalburg, Mia Hargis, Sarah Staller, Meredith Berty and Alysha Clements all picked up wins, while winning in doubles were the teams of Emma Goodman and Schalburg, Berty and Clements and Lucy List and Sophie Watson.
"In singles play, our girls did a great job of adjusting to their style of play and pace of their shots," Jenkins said. "Meredith and Alysha did really well in doubles coming to the net and forcing their opponents to try lob over them. Sophie and Lucy worked well together. Their switches and court movement was very good."
There were also 13 JV doubles matches, with Robinson picking up wins in five of those.
Winning for RHS were the teams of Stevee Walker and Morgan Graupmann, Megan Gallagher and Edy Treadway, Destanee Liston and Lisa Henry, Rebecca Henry and Esperanza Murillo and Laura Rios and Autumn Tennison.
"It was awesome to get to play 13 JV matches, even if they had to be four-game sets," Jenkins said. "Paris brought all 23 of their players, so we were able to arrange matches so 31 of our girls played at least a one-set match. When you have 11 first-year players, it is fun to watch their improvement from week to week."
