Panthers, Lady Panthers win Shrine Games

It was a clean sweep for the west side of the county Monday (May 7), as Oblong High School's baseball and softball teams both picked up wins over rival Hutsonville-Palestine in the annual Crawford County Shrine Game in Oblong.

For the second time this season, the Panthers overcame an early deficit to edge the Tigers by one run, this time by a score of 7-6, after winning 8-7 in their first meeting. Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers rolled over the Lady Tigers once again, this time to the tune of an 18-0 victory.

In the baseball game, Hutsonville-Palestine grabbed an early lead, scoring a run in the first and plating four more in the second for a 5-0 advantage. Oblong rallied for five runs in the fourth to tie the game, then followed with two runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Hutsonville-Palestine came back with a run in the sixth, but the Panthers were able to hold on for the win.

Nate Meese led OHS at the plate with three singles and two runs scored, while Zane Belford doubled, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Tyler Musgrave added a base hit and two runs batted in, Tanner Otey singled, drove in a run and scored a run, Kacey Cheek singled and scored a run, Josh Bailey had a base hit, Conner Potts knocked in a run and scored a run and Logan Richards scored a run.

Cheek picked up the win in relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits, while striking out nine in three and two-thirds innings. Meese started and went three and one-third innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Brennen Burkett led the offense for the Tigers with two doubles and two runs batted in, while Parker Michael doubled, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Will Newlin doubled, scored twice and knocked in a run, Evan Newlin singled and scored a run, Jess Newlin added a base hit, Kegan Cooper drove in a run and Wyatt Kennedy and Max Illyes each scored a run.

Burkett also was tagged with the loss on the mound, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits, while walking four and striking out five in two and two-thirds innings. Evan Newlin started and went three and one-third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three.

In the softball game, neither team scored in the first inning, but Oblong broke the game wide open in the second with a 10-run outburst and they never looked back. The Lady Panthers followed up with an eight-run third inning and cruised to the win in a game that was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Nyah Laino led the 16-hit OHS attack with a triple, a double, a single and two runs batted in, while Samantha Johnson doubled twice, knocked in two runs and scored a pair of runs. Harley Harrison doubled, singled, drove in three runs and scored twice, Bridget Briner doubled, singled, knocked in three runs and scored a run, Summer Johnson singled twice, knocked in a pair of runs and scored a run, Madison Neeley tripled, scored three times and drove in two runs, Aireka Burke singled, scored three runs and knocked in a run, Abbie Dart doubled and scored a run, Hannah Meese and Kara Reider each singled and scored a run, Macie Stephens scored three runs, Kenzi McIntosh drove in a run and scored a run and Morgan Gill scored a run.

Camryn Travis earned the win on the mound, giving up one hit and striking out seven in three scoreless innings. Allison Miller finished up, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out five in two scoreless frames.

Katelyn Wilber and Lindsay Ryan led the Lady Tigers at the plate with two singles apiece, while Abby Bezy also had a base hit.

Wilber suffered the loss on the mound, giving up 16 runs, 15 earned, on 13 hits, while walking two and striking out two in two-plus innings. Ryan finished up, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits, while walking three and striking out one in two innings of relief.
