Statesmen win two of three from Rend Lake
Sports Editor

A chance to complete a series sweep came up just short for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team over the weekend.

The Statesmen opened up their Great Rivers Athletic Conference series with Rend Lake by sweeping Saturday (May 5)'s doubleheader in Robinson, 4-3 and 5-1, but LTC dropped the series finale at Ina Sunday (May 6), 10-5.

In game one Saturday, neither team scored until the fifth, when each team plated a run to keep the game tied. Rend Lake then grabbed a 2-1 lead with a run in the seventh, only for LTC to tie the game again with a run in the eighth. The score remained tied until the top of the 11th, when Rend Lake pushed across a run to take a 3-2 lead. However, Coby Taylor followed Jordan Brewer's one-out single with a two-run home run to right field to give the Statesmen the walk-off victory.

Taylor led the offense for LTC with a home run, two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Bryson Bloomer doubled, singled, knocked in a run and scored a run. Tucker Greer added a base hit and a run batted in, Brewer and Jacob Gonzales each singled and scored a run and Thomas Cessna had a base hit.

Conar Steinbaugh picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five in four innings of relief. Kaleb Huxford started and went seven innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

In game two, the Statesmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to another win.

After the four-run first inning outburst, the Statesmen plated another run in the fifth to make the score 5-0. Rend Lake was able to scratch out a run in the top of the sixth to avoid being shut out.

Cessna led LTC at the plate with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Greer tripled and scored a run. Brewer posted a base hit, two runs scored and a run batted in, Jose Ramos singled and knocked in a run, Taylor singled and scored a run and Bloomer added a base hit.

Nate Beavers went the distance on the mound to earn the win, allowing a run on four hits, while walking one and striking out seven in seven innings.

On Sunday, each team scored a run in the first, then Rend Lake scored twice in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Lincoln Trail responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game, only for Rend Lake to counter with three runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. The Statesmen plated a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-4, but Rend Lake got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Lincoln Trail came back with another run in the top of the eighth, only for Rend Lake to tack on three insurance runs in their half of the inning to secure the victory.

Greer led LTC at the plate with two doubles, a single, a run batted in and a run scored, while Gonzales doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored a run. Brewer doubled, singled and scored a run, Steinbaugh doubled and scored a run, Cessna and Jackson Niehaus added a base hit and a run batted in apiece and Seth Frye scored a run.

Joey Ivey was tagged with the loss in relief, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out one in an inning of work. Brady Bowling started and went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts, while Colin Kriminger gave up four runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings of relief.
