Lady Maroons fall at Lawrenceville, 51-40
Sports Editor

A second straight strong effort kept Robinson High School's girls' basketball team in the game Monday night (Jan. 8), but not enough for the Lady Maroons to find a way into the win column.

Robinson played well throughout their Little Illini Conference game at Lawrenceville, but came out on the short end of a 51-40 decision.

"I am really proud of my girls," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "They played hard for all four quarters and never gave up."

The Lady Maroons stormed to a 6-2 lead out of the gate and held Lawrenceville without a field goal for more than six minutes in the first quarter. However, the Lady Indians got on track and finished the period on an 11-4 run to take a 13-10 lead.

Lawrenceville extended its lead to 17-12, but a three-pointer by Ella Florkowski and a jumper from Andrea Schalburg tied the game at 17-17 with 3:31 remaining. Those would be the last points of the half for RHS, as Lawrenceville ended on a 6-0 run to take a 23-17 lead at halftime.

Robinson hung around in the third quarter, closing the gap to one, 27-26, with 5:05 remaining on a three-pointer by Schalburg, but Lawrenceville took a 37-31 lead into the fourth quarter thanks to a deep three-pointer from Jayley Akers at the buzzer.

A basket and free throw by Jaedyn Johnson pulled the Lady Maroons to within 38-35 at the 5:02 mark, but a pair of three-point plays by Akers pushed the margin to 44-35 with 4:20 left and the Lady Indians were able to seal the game at the free throw line.

Despite the loss, the Lady Maroons shot the ball well from the field, making 13-31 attempts (42 percent), including 10-24 from two-point range (42 percent) and 3-7 from three-point range (43 percent). Meanwhile, Lawrenceville shot just 27 percent (14-52), but made up for it at the free throw line, where they hit 18-27 foul shots (67 percent), while Robinson made just 11-18 free throws (61 percent).

Johnson led RHS with 12 points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist, while Lauren Weber posted eight points, 17 rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. Florkowski contributed eight points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Schalburg netted eight points, three rebounds and three assists and Daphne Phillippe added four points, five rebounds and one assist.

Akers led Lawrenceville with 28 points, four steals and three rebounds, while Bailey Dining collected eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Robinson also lost the junior varsity game, 32-21.

Bailey Strauch led RHS with 10 points and two rebounds, while Patience Steward contributed four points and four rebounds.

"We've come so far and we're getting better every day," Bopp said. "Hopefully these two games will help prepare us for Thursday (in the LIC Tournament against Red Hill)."
