Maroons hammer Flora in LIC tilt, 78-49

Strong efforts on both ends of the floor led Robinson High School's boys' basketball team to a lopsided win Friday night (Jan. 5).

The Maroons carried the momentum from their consolation championship at the First Financial Wabash Valley Classic in Terre Haute last week by whipping visiting Flora, 78-49, in Little Illini Conference play.

"This was big for us," RHS head coach Mack Thompson said. "Conference (tournament) seeding is Monday, so this was an important win for us. It is a good feeling to play like this and head into an 11-day break on a four-game winning streak."

Robinson led virtually throughout after jumping out to a 7-2 lead to start the game. Flora countered with an 8-2 run to take their only lead of the game at 10-9 with 2:35 left in the opening quarter. However, Robinson responded with a 10-2 run to end the period for a 19-12 lead and they would never trail again.

The Maroons controlled much of the second quarter, outscoring Flora 21-9, including a 15-2 run over the final 2:21 to take a 40-21 lead at halftime.

Robinson continued to pour it on in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points to make the score 49-21 with 4:39 to play. A three-point play by Walker Sandschafer pushed the Maroons' lead to 30, but Flora scored the final five points to make the score 56-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

"We weren't as tuned in early as we should have been, so I made some substitutions and when those kids I took out got back in, we got going," Thompson said. "That run at the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third was a back breaker."

Flora continued to chip away early in the fourth, trimming the lead all the way down to 57-40 with 5:13 remaining, but Robinson answered with a 15-4 run to extend the advantage to 72-44 with 1:18 left. A couple of late three-pointers pushed the RHS margin to 32 before they settled for the 29-point win.

Another strong shooting performance carried the Maroons, as they made 25-53 field goal attempts (47 percent), which included a 15-33 effort from two-point range (45 percent) and a 10-20 showing from three-point range (50 percent). The Maroons were also 18-22 at the free throw line (82 percent) and dominated the glass, outrebounding Flora 44-17.

"Shooters like it when you offensive rebound like we did," Thompson said. "It seemed like every time the ball came off the board it was ours. We shot the ball well tonight and we played with some passion and desire and that's what we have to do to be successful."

Sandschafer led RHS with 24 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocked shots, while Chance Black contributed 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Brayden Childress posted 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots, Alex Weber collected seven points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal and one assist, Kade Lassen totaled seven points, four rebounds and four assists, Branton Scott recorded six points, 10 rebounds and one assist, Dylan Smith netted three points, one rebound, one steal and one assist and Ethan Shidler tossed in three points.

Trenton Brown led Flora with 19 points, seven rebounds and one blocked shot, while Owen Leib posted 13 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

In the junior varsity contest, Robinson dropped a 64-50 decision.

Jason Meeks led RHS with 13 points, while Childress, David Goble and Sawyer Hoalt scored seven points apiece.
