Lady Statesmen win pair at Vincennes

Strong play early on this season continued for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team over the weekend.

The Lady Statesmen remained unbeaten on the young season with a pair of lopsided wins at the Sodexo Classic in Vincennes. Lincoln Trail rolled past Indiana Tech Saturday (Nov. 4), 79-57, then cruised past Olive-Harvey on Sunday (Nov. 5), 70-48.

On Saturday, LTC jumped out to a 22-15 lead after one quarter, then broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Indiana Tech 20-5 to take a 42-20 lead at halftime. Both teams then scored 23 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth, allowing LTC to maintain its advantage and coast to the win.

"We didn't play as well as we could of, but we had a good defensive second quarter that allowed us to pull away and get our bench on the floor in the second half," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "I felt like we didn't compete on the defensive end of the floor in the first quarter, so we have to come ready to play from here on out."

Kaitlyn Howe led four players in double figures for LTC with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Bre Spalding posted 11 points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist. Taylor Bradley netted 10 points and three rebounds, Alexis McDowell recorded 10 points and one rebound, Shamarrhea Young totaled eight points, 10 rebounds, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot, Kaitlin Adams collected seven points, two steals and one rebound, Callie Clay registered six points and one rebound, Mykiah Jones contributed four points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal, Kiana Wininger chipped in with four points, one rebound, one steal and one assist, Biauca Mitchell added two points and three rebounds and Gracie Smith had two points and one assist.

"Our inside game was really solid today," Sparks said. "Taylor and Shamarrhea really helped us stretch the floor with their inside presence. They did a great job on the boards as well as Lauren Hipsher."

Morganne Holdreith led Indiana Tech with 27 points and six rebounds, while Tearra Lapsley and Skylar Axsom were also in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

In Sunday's game, LTC jumped out to an early lead and coasted to another win. The Lady Statesmen led 21-13 at halftime, then extended their lead to 42-23 at halftime and 60-34 after three quarters before Olive-Harvey won the fourth quarter 14-10 to reach the final margin.

"I felt like we played a more complete game today," Sparks said. "We were ready to play from the tip off. We had 18 total assists, which was one of our points of emphasis going into the game. I thought our defense was good across the board. We did a good job of sticking to our game plan."

All 16 players for LTC found the scoring column, but no one reached double figures. Smith led the Lady Statesmen with eight points and two rebounds, Hipsher collected seven points, eight rebounds and two assists, Bradley posted seven points, five rebounds and one assist, Jamesha Pritchard totaled six points, five rebounds and two assists, Young netted six points, one rebound and one steal, Adams collected five points, three rebounds and one assist, Jones recorded five points and two assists, Wininger contributed four points, three rebounds and three assists, Howe registered three points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal, Clay chipped in with three points, four rebounds and one steal, Mitchell added two points and three rebounds, Josie Goff had two points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal, Samara Stanley had two points and one rebound and Madison Moore tossed in two points.

Danielle Whitaker led Olive-Harvey with 18 points, while Brianna Henderson scored 13 and Bianca Henderson added 11.

"We still have a lot of areas to improve, but I love this group," Sparks said. "They work hard. We just need to keep getting better."
