Lady Statesmen drop pair of matches
Sports Editor

Two matches both ended in disappointing fashion for Lincoln Trail College's volleyball team this week, as they wrapped up regular season play.

The Lady Statesmen dropped a three-set match to Lewis & Clark Community College Tuesday (Oct. 24), 19-25, 19-25, 8-25.

"It was another frustrating evening," LTC head coach Dana Goodwin said. "We had a great start, played very well and even had a five-point lead. However, a couple of miscues and unforced errors hurt us. A similar thing happened in the second set, then nothing went well in the third set."

Samantha Brookman led LTC with 10 good serves, 10 spikes with four kills and eight blocks, while Haley Towle posted seven good serves with one ace, 18 spikes with eight kills and 10 digs. Mia McCoskey totaled eight good serves with one ace, 16 spikes with nine kills and 15 digs, Linzy Lunsford contributed eight good serves, seven spikes with three kills, seven blocks with one stuff and eight digs and Rachel Graham netted eight good serves, 35 good sets with 18 assists and three digs.

On Wednesday (Oct. 25), Lincoln Trail had a strong start, then faltered late in a five-set loss at Rend Lake Wednesday, 25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 11-15.

"We let another game slip away after playing so well in the first two sets," Goodwin said. "We rallied and tied the (third) game 24-24, but two unforced errors cost us the game and ultimately the match. We could not recover from the disappointment of losing the third set and we lost focus in the fourth set. We have to play better and maintain our focus."

Towle led LTC with 21 good serves, including four aces, 28 spikes with eight kills and 10 digs, while Baylee Baker posted 65 good sets with 26 assists and eight digs. Brookman totaled 16 good serves with two aces, 18 spikes with seven kills and five stuff blocks, Emily Penfold contributed 15 good serves with two aces, 14 spikes with six kills and one stuff block, McCoskey netted 12 good serves with three aces, 24 spikes with 12 kills and 10 digs and Graham recorded 15 good serves with one ace, 55 good sets with 16 assists and four digs.

"Our serving was great, we only missed three in 99 attempts," Goodwin said. "Our blocking was much better with 16 stuff blocks and Baylee Baker did a great job setting with 26 assists. Mia and Haley had good games, too."
