Taking an opponent lightly can be costly and that proved to be the case for Oblong High School's football team Friday night.
The Panthers were coming off their first win of the season and maybe went in a little overconfident and ended up on the wrong side of a 48-15 decision at Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond.
"We went in there thinking we were going to beat them and ended up beating ourselves," OHS head coach Chad Pusey said. "You've got to show up for every game ready to go and tonight we didn't."
Oblong trailed 13-0 after one quarter, then the Panthers gave up three more scores in the second period for a 34-0 deficit.
The Panthers were able to score late in the second in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Logan Richards to Jarrett Manhart, then Alex Ford ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 34-8 at halftime.
However, that was as close as Oblong would get. Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond would add long touchdown runs in the third and fourth quarters to extend their advantage to 48-8 and set the running clock in motion via the IHSA's mercy rule.
The Panthers would add a touchdown in the final minutes on a 35-yard pass from Richards to Zane Belford, but it was too little, too late.
Richards led OHS with 107 yards passing and two touchdowns, with Manhart catching three passes for 50 yards and a score and Belford hauling in four receptions for 47 yards and a score. Ford was the leading rusher for the Panthers with 58 yards on 14 carries.
Marcus Vanausdoll led Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond with 115 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Kobe Wells ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception for another score. Will Cohan added 78 yards passing with a touchdown and 38 yards rushing and another score and Adam Day had 64 yards receiving with a touchdown.
Oblong (1-2) will play at Palestine-Hutsonville for the annual Crawford County Shrine Game Friday at 7 p.m.
