Being competitive was the goal, but Palestine-Hutsonville's football team was unable to complete the task Friday night (Sept. 8).
The Pioneers fell behind early and never recovered in a 62-6 loss at Arcola.
Palestine-Hutsonville gave up 35 points in the first quarter, including a pair of interception returns for scores, while Arcola tacked on 21 more points in the second quarter for a commanding 56-0 halftime lead.
With the clock running continuously for the entire second half due to the IHSA's mercy rule, Arcola added another score in the third quarter for a 62-0 advantage, while Palestine-Hutsonville avoided being shut out thanks to Blaze Dedrick's three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Dedrick was the leading rusher for the Pioneers with 31 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while Evan Newlin completed four passes for 75 yards, two of which went to Isaac York for 60 yards, while York also completed a pass to Newlin for 10 yards.
Arcola was led by quarterback Conner Strader, who threw for 70 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 79 yards. Backup quarterback Dale Still ran for 70 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score, while Diego Perez had two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception, Mario Cortez had a receiving touchdown and rushing touchdown and Martin Rund also caught a touchdown pass.
