Two of Crawford County's volleyball teams fared well in the annual Hutsonville Invitational tournament Saturday (Aug. 26).

Host Hutsonville-Palestine won all three of their pool play matches before falling in the championship match for a second-place finish, while Oblong alternated wins and losses throughout the day on their way to finishing fourth.

In Pool B, Hutsonville-Palestine picked up wins over Martinsville 25-16, 22-25, 16-14, Red Hill 25-5, 25-16 and Bement, 25-18, 22-25, 15-6, then dropped the championship match to Newton, 17-25, 24-26.

"I am very proud of the girls and how they played Saturday," HHS-PHS head coach Shandy Matthews said. "Four games is a lot to play in one day, especially at the beginning of the season. They played well and as a team and it was nice to see them not give up and keep working until the end. They have a lot to be proud of and hope they continue to improve and grow as a team the rest of the season."

Against Martinsville, Ashlyn Matthews led the Lady Tigers with 14 good serves, including two aces and nine spikes with one kill, while Ashley Lowrance posted 13 good serves with two aces and 16 good sets. Marah Matthews contributed 11 good serves and 45 good sets and Mandi Alspach added 11 spikes with eight kills, five good serves and one block.

Against Red Hill, Ashlyn Matthews was 26-26 on serves with eight aces and added four spikes with one kill, while Alspach posted eight spikes with five kills, one good serve and one block. Marah Matthews added seven good serves with one ace and 31 good sets, Allison Dunlap netted seven spikes with one kill and two good serves with two aces and Paige Poorman contributed five spikes with three kills and four good serves with one ace.

Against Bement, Ashlyn Matthews went 20-20 on serves with five aces and had 16 spikes with five kills, while Alspach totaled 15 spikes with 10 kills, seven blocks and four good serves with two aces. Marah Matthews netted 10 good serves with one ace and 41 good sets, Lowrance totaled eight good serves with two aces and 16 good sets and Macy Biggs added seven good serves with one ace and three spikes with two kills.

In the championship match, Marah Matthews led the Lady Tigers with 10 good serves, including two aces and 27 good sets, while Biggs posted eight good serves and three spikes with two kills. Poorman netted six good serves and three spikes with two kills, Alspach totaled five good serves with two aces, four spikes with three kills and three blocks and Ashlyn Matthews added five good serves and four spikes with three kills.

Meanwhile, Oblong opened with a 25-19, 25-23 win over Lawrenceville, then lost to Newton 13-25, 15-25. The Lady Panthers then narrowly defeated Dugger, Ind., 25-18, 29-27 before falling in three sets to Martinsville, 25-21, 21-25, 10-15, in the third-place match.

For the tournament, Samantha Johnson led OHS with 24 points, including nine aces, along with 18 kills and five blocks, while Camryn Mendenhall posted 23 points with five aces, 16 kills and two blocks. Paige Mendenhall contributed 17 points with eight aces, two assists and one kill, Summer Johnson netted 16 points with four aces and 20 kills and Abbie Dart totaled 14 points with nine aces, 81 assists and nine kills.

In the fifth-place match, Bement beat Lawrenceville in three sets, 25-11, 15-25, 15-8, while Red Hill downed Dugger in the seventh-place match, 25-23, 25-18.
