Lady Tigers lose slugfest at EC, 16-10

Hitting was not the problem for Hutsonville-Palestine's softball team Monday.

Pitching and defense were, however.

The Lady Tigers pounded out 12 hits and scored 10 runs, but Hutsonville-Palestine pitchers gave up 16 runs on 14 hits, while also committing seven errors in the field in a 16-10 loss at Edwards County in Little Illini Conference play.

The two teams combined for 26 hits in the slugfest, including an astounding eight home runs.

Hutsonville-Palestine grabbed the lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Katie Williams, but Edwards County struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Lady Tigers responded with a run in the second on a bases-loaded single by Calee Fulling, then plated three runs in the third to regain the lead.

Williams scored the first run on an error after a base hit by Halen Revalee to tie the game, then Kiley Rariden doubled home Rhiannon Pearse, who ran for Revalee. Taci Newlin added a run-scoring single later in the inning to put Hutsonville-Palestine on top 5-3.

However, Edwards County responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead, 7-5. Hutsonville-Palestine got a run back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Erikka Patterson, but Edwards County came back with two in their half of the fourth on a pair of solo home runs and added another in the fifth to make the score 10-6.

Hutsonville-Palestine countered with a four-run sixth inning thanks to Williams' grand slam home run to tie the game at 10-10, but Edwards County answered with a six-run bottom of the sixth, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back home runs to start the inning and the Lady Lions were able to hold onto the lead and secure the win.

Williams led the Lady Tigers at the plate with two home runs, a single, five runs batted in and three runs scored, while Rariden and Fulling posted a double, a single, a run batted in and a run scored apiece. Newlin singled, knocked in a run and scored a run, Chloe Fulling singled and scored a run, Revalee, Jennifer Heldebrandt and McKenna Elder added a base hit apiece, Patterson drove in a run and scored a run and Pearse and Becky Mendenhall each scored a run.

Calee Fulling took the loss on the mound, allowing 15 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits, while walking none and striking out four in five and two-thirds innings. Rylee Watson tossed one-third of an inning, allowing an unearned run on one hit.
