Maroons build big lead, hold on late for 5-4 LIC win over Newton
| One inning was enough - barely - for Robinson High School's baseball team to get back in the win column Monday.|
The Maroons scored all of their runs in the second inning, then had to hang on late to pick up a 5-4 win over visiting Newton in Little Illini Conference play.
Robinson jumped on top with a five-run second inning, but Newton came back with three in the top of the third and added another run in the fourth to pull within 5-4. However, the Maroons were able to finish off the Eagles and hold on for the win.
Landen Hoagland led RHS at the plate with a double, a single, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Logan Johnson doubled, singled and scored a run. Michael Elliott doubled and knocked in a run, Wes Wright and Bucky Stevens posted a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored apiece, Logan Miller singled and scored a run and Darin Cox and Colton Williamson each had a base hit.
Johnson picked up the win on the mound, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits, while walking none and striking out four in five innings. Hoagland went the rest of the way, striking out two batters in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
