Lady Maroons dig out of early hole, hold on late to beat Red Hill, 9-6
| It wasn't as easy as the first meeting, but Robinson High School's softball team was still able to notch another win over Red Hill Thursday.|
The Lady Maroons had to battle back from an early deficit, then had to hold off a late charge after gaining the lead on their way to a 9-6 victory in Little Illini Conference play. In an earlier meeting this season, Robinson rolled to a 14-3 win.
Robinson dug themselves an early hole on Thursday, as Red Hill scored twice in the first and once in the third to take a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Maroons countered with nine straight runs over the next three innings. Robinson scored a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to tie the game, then erupted for six runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. Red Hill tried to get back in it, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the seventh, but the Lady Maroons were able to hang on for the win.
Connor York led RHS at the plate with two singles and a run batted in, while Alisha Lewis tripled, knocked in a run and scored a run. Karnell Bowen posted a double, two runs scored and a run batted in, Emily Calip singled and scored two runs, Kirbie Mendenhall added a base hit and a run scored, Sonnie Givens singled and drove in a run, Alaina Randolph had a single and Olivia Hickey, Anna Stephens and Alexis Sullivan each scored a run.
Parker Corder earned the win on the mound, allowing six runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits, while walking four and striking out seven in seven innings of work.
Robinson (7-3, 4-0 LIC) will play host to Edwards County for a LIC contest Monday at 4:30 p.m.
