Several strong performances nearly got Robinson High School's girls' track team a win in a three-team meet at Salem Tuesday.
The Lady Maroons won six events and placed second in several others, on their way to a second-place finish. Robinson totaled 64.5 points, finishing just behind Nashville, who scored 68.5. Host Salem was third with 54.
"It was a close race with several new personal bests set for our team, but we came up just short in team points," RHS head coach Shannon Goebel said. "I am proud of our girls' performance and display of sportsmanship. We had several people step up to fill in for injured team mates and everyone worked hard."
Robinson earned wins in five individual events and one relay race. Mykaela Thomas finished first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.13, while Kalee Childress won the 300 hurdles in 55.15. Kari Bopp won the 400 in 1:09, Lauren Erickson won the 3200 with a time of 14:31, Stephanie Hawkins won the pole vault at 7-0 and the 3200 relay team of Hawkins, Erickson, Courtney Callaway and Kirstyn Bowen finished first with a time of 11:43.24.
"Lauren was able to return for her first meet back from a knee injury and helped out the team greatly in the 3200 relay and 3200," Goebel said. "Our distance girls turned in stellar times and we are starting to find the right combinations for our relay teams before going into the heart of our season."
Finishing second were Bopp in the triple jump (30-1), Hawkins in the 1600 (6:18), Mykala Wolf in the high jump (4-4), Sydney Beard in the 100 hurdles (18.15) and the 1600 relay team of Callaway, Josie Goff, Thomas and Bopp (5:03.39).
Robinson will host the annual Sam Bennett Invitational Friday at 11 a.m.
