Lady Maroons outslugged by St. Anthony in 13-10 loss Thursday

Scoring runs hasn't been a problem for Robinson High School's softball team, but keeping their opponent off the scoreboard has.

The Lady Maroons scored double-digit runs for the second straight game, but it was not enough to earn a win this time, as they fell to Effingham St. Anthony, 13-10.

"We have scored 27 runs in three games, but we are 1-2," RHS head coach Mark Brayfield said. "We have got to find our defense."

Robinson jumped on top early, scoring twice in the first inning, then erupted for six runs in the third to take an 8-0 lead. However, Effingham St. Anthony responded with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the third, with most of the damage coming with two outs. The Lady Maroons countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 10-7, but they would not score again. St. Anthony countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within 10-9, then plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the come-from-behind win.

"We were up 8-0 and seemed to be on cruise control," Brayfield said. "Then a couple of walks and some mental mistakes and all of a sudden its 8-7. Our pitchers have to be able to pitch through adversity, but the defense also has to help them."

Sonnie Givens led the offense for RHS with a home run, two singles, five runs batted in and three runs scored, while Parker Corder posted two singles and three runs batted in. Kirbie Mendenhall netted two singles and two runs scored, Alaina Randolph singled and knocked in a run and Alisha Lewis, Connor York and Olivia Hickey added a base hit apiece.

Mendenhall suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning, while Corder started and went five and one-third innings, giving up nine runs on 11 hits, while walking two and striking out three.
