Lady Statesmen split recent games

Rain and unseasonably cold temperatures have hampered Lincoln Trail College's softball team from getting all of their games in during their spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., but the Lady Statesmen were able to avoid the rain drops at times to get a couple of games in.

Tuesday got off to a strong start, as Lincoln Trail rolled past Jackson Community College, 8-0.

The Lady Statesmen opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning and were never threatened. A six-run fourth inning put the game out of reach and the game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Olivia Titus led the offense for LTC with two doubles, two runs scored and a run batted in, while Ashlyn Sullivan tripled, singled, scored twice and knocked in a run. McKenzi Kelly posted two singles, a run batted in and a run scored, Patience Tincher doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, Allie Minton added a base hit and a run batted in, Courtney Rudolph singled, Shayla Hughes drove in a run and Keegan Jones and Brianna Price each scored a run.

Daphne Dunegan earned the win on the mound, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out eight in five innings.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out and originally rescheduled for Thursday, however, cold temperatures and wet conditions have pushed it back to Friday.

On Wednesday, the Lady Statesmen fell behind early and dropped an 11-2 decision to Owens Community College.

Owens scored once in the first to take an early lead, then plated four runs in the second and four more in the third for a 9-0 advantage. Lincoln Trail scored twice in the bottom of the third to make the score 9-2, but Owens tacked on two runs in the fifth to complete the scoring.

The game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Hensley led LTC at the plate with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, while Titus and Kelly each doubled. Tincher added a base hit and a run scored and Hughes knocked in a run.

Tincher took the loss on the mound, giving up 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits, while walking six and striking out three in five innings.

Game two was again postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for Friday as well.

Lincoln Trail (2-5) is now slated to play twice on Friday against Jackson and Southeastern (N.C.) Community College, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
