Lady Statesmen beat Southeastern, 70-64
Sports Editor

A strong second half was enough to get Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team back in the win column Monday night.

The Lady Statesmen overcame a five-point halftime deficit and some hot long-range shooting from host Southeastern Illinois to pick up a 70-64 come-from-behind win in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

Lincoln Trail found themselves trailing 33-28 at halftime, but outscored Southeastern Illinois 42-31 in the second half to earn the victory.

It was the second win for the Lady Statesmen in their last three games and their second win over Southeastern Illinois this season, as LTC won the previous match-up, 74-58, in Robinson Jan. 15.

Lincoln Trail got the win despite Southeastern Illinois making 13 three-pointers in the game, but eight of those came in the first half, accounting for 24 of Southeastern's 33 points. The Lady Statesmen knocked down seven three-pointers of their own in the game and outscored SIC 38-20 from two-point range. Lincoln Trail also outscored SIC by six at the free throw line, but the Lady Statesmen could have won by a more comfortable margin, as they were just 11-25 at the free throw line (44 percent), while Southeastern made 5-8 foul shots (63 percent).

Beth Mahurin led LTC with 24 points, while Blayr Poston tossed in 12 points on four three-pointers. Keaira Pennie was also in double figures with 10 points, Jada Grady netted eight points, Danielle Nettleton scored seven, Taylor Birchfield added five and Jordan Like and Aaliyah Johnson each had two.

Nakaila Sheppard led Southeastern Illinois with 18 points, while Anna Best and Brooke Dodane were also in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Lincoln Trail (8-15, 3-9 GRAC) will play host to Kaskaskia College for a GRAC contest Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
