A quick start and a strong finish propelled Oblong High School's boys' basketball team to victory Tuesday night, as they rolled past visiting Cumberland, 70-47, in Little Illini Conference play.

The Panthers bolted out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter and slowly pulled away for the win. Each team scored 17 points in the second quarter to make the score 37-27 at halftime, then Oblong outscored Cumberland 17-9 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 54-36 and outscored Cumberland 16-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball overall, but Oblong's proficiency from beyond the arc proved to be the difference. The Panthers made 24-57 field goal attempts (42 percent), which included a 15-36 effort from two-point range (42 percent) and a 9-21 performance from three-point range (43 percent). Meanwhile, Cumberland made just 17-55 shots from the floor (31 percent), including 13-36 from inside the arc (36 percent) and 4-19 from long distance (21 percent). The outcome could have been more lopsided, but the Panthers made just 13-30 free throw attempts (43 percent), while Cumberland made 9-15 foul shots (60 percent).

Koert Mehler led OHS with 26 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Dawson Maus posted 21 points, four rebounds and two assists. Jared Mayhew totaled 12 points, 25 rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist, Michael Brown contributed four points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal, Brody Allen tossed in four points and Alec Jacobs netted three points, five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.

Monte Wolke led Cumberland with 15 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals, while Blayke Cutts posted nine points and three rebounds.

Oblong lost the junior varsity game, 47-37. Zander Laino led OHS with 13 points, while Gage Kidwell scored six. Tyler Woods, Ryan Gill and Logan Goodwin netted four points apiece and Zach Hawkins and Hunter Goodwin each added three.

Oblong (10-15, 2-7 LIC) will play at Red Hill for a LIC contest Friday at 6:15 p.m.
