Maroons roll past Tigers for 74-42 win

One county team was going to put an end to a losing streak Monday night, when a pair of struggling Crawford County squads squared off against each other in Little Illini Conference play.

In the end, the home team put an end to their slide, as Robinson rolled past visiting Hutsonville-Palestine, 74-42, to snap a three-game skid. Meanwhile, it was the eighth straight loss for the Tigers, who have yet to win in 2014 and are also winless in conference play.

The game was close early, as the two teams were deadlocked at 13-13 in the first quarter before a 6-0 RHS run to end the period gave the Maroons a 19-13 lead. Robinson then outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half. The Maroons outscored the Tigers 23-15 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 57-37, then outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 17-5 in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Robinson shot 31-67 from the floor in the game (46 percent), including 28-53 from two-point range (53 percent) and 3-14 from three-point range (21 percent). Meanwhile, Hutsonville-Palestine made 16-44 field goal attempts (36 percent), which included a 13-33 effort from inside the arc (39 percent) and a 3-11 performance from long distance (27 percent). Robinson was also 9-14 at the free throw line (64 percent), while Hutsonville-Palestine made 7-12 foul shots (58 percent).

A balanced scoring attack led Robinson as 11 of the 13 players who saw action found their way into the scoring column, including three in double figures. Jason Richart topped RHS with 16 points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Wes Harrison posted 15 points, 17 rebounds and one blocked shot. Michael Akande contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Parker Bopp totaled eight points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Connor Griffin netted six points, five rebounds and two assists, Noah Tennison registered five points, four assists and one rebound, Dylan Dirks chipped in with three points, three rebounds and one assist, Alex Brown collected two points and six rebounds, Dalton Albright added two points, one rebound, one assist and one steal, Joey Wright had two points and one rebound and Collin Rains scored two points.

Meanwhile, just five players scored for Hutsonville-Palestine, but three of them did reach double digits. Graham Alspach led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds and two assists, while Treyver Ferguson posted 11 points and two rebounds. Landon Williams contributed 10 points, one rebound, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot, Kienan Knecht netted three points and seven rebounds and Trent Newlin added two points, one rebound and one assist.

Robinson also won the junior varsity game 58-23.

Joey Wright led RHS with 14 points, while Dirks was also in double figures with 12. Ethan White, Bucky Stevens and Mason Shew netted nine points apiece, Garrett Blagrave tossed in four and Tennison added one.

Scoring for Hutsonville-Palestine was not available.
