Lady Pioneers lose at Newton, 58-34

Coming off a good showing in a loss to Flora and also playing well for most of their last meeting with Newton in the Little Illini Conference Tournament 10 days earlier, Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team was looking for more of the same Tuesday night.

Unfortunately, that wasn't in the cards. Newton got off to a hot start and put the Lady Pioneers in a hole they could not climb out of, resulting in a 58-34 loss in a LIC make-up game at Newton.

Palestine-Hutsonville fell behind 20-10 after one quarter of play, then was outscored 16-10 in the second quarter for a 36-20 halftime deficit. Things got worse in the third quarter, as the Lady Pioneers were outscored 13-4 to make the score 49-24. Palestine-Hutsonville did outscore Newton 10-9 in the fourth quarter, but the outcome was already decided.

The Lady Pioneers struggled to find the basket from all areas on the floor, making just 15-48 field goal attempts (31 percent), including 14-40 from two-point range (35 percent) and 1-8 from three-point range (13 percent). Palestine-Hutsonville was also 3-6 from the free throw line (50 percent).

Meanwhile, Newton made 20 baskets, including four from long distance and the Lady Eagles were 18-20 at the free throw line (90 percent).

Emily Nehls led Palestine-Hutsonville with eight points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists and one blocked shot, while Calee Fulling posted seven points, 22 rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Katie Williams contributed six points and three rebounds, McKenna Elder netted five points, four rebounds and two steals, Kiley Rariden totaled four points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal and Leslie Churchwell added four points, four rebounds and one steal.

Andrea Cartright led Newton with 17 points, while Emily Kerner was also in double figures with 10 points.

Palestine-Hutsonville also lost the junior varsity game 39-18.

Halen Revalee led Palestine-Hutsonville with five points, while Becky Mendenhall and Taylor Keene scored four points apiece. Katherine Knoblett and Savanna Wells each netted two points and Erikka Patterson added one.

Palestine-Hutsonville (13-6, 4-4 LIC) will play at Cumberland for a LIC contest Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
