Lady Statesmen struggle in second half of 55-35 loss to Lake Land
Sports Editor

Points were hard to come by Wednesday night, especially in the second half for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team.

The Lady Statesmen held a lead at halftime on the road at Lake Land College, but struggled over the final 20 minutes on their way to a 55-35 loss in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

Lincoln Trail managed to grab a 25-22 lead in a low-scoring first half, but the Lady Statesmen could not find the range after halftime, as they scored just 10 points over the final 20 minutes. Lake Land outscored Lincoln Trail 33-10 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Neither team could get much going offensively, especially early, as the game was tied 10-10 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Lincoln Trail managed to forge ahead, outscoring Lake Land 15-12 the rest of the half for a three-point halftime lead. That all changed in the second half, as Lake Land turned up the defense and picked up their offense late to pull away.

The Lady Statesmen still held a 29-28 lead with about 11 minutes to play, but a three-pointer by Lake Land's Erica Hotze gave them a 31-29 lead and started a 27-6 run to finish the game, allowing Lake Land to pull away for an easy win.

No player reached double figures for the Lady Statesmen, as they were led by Keaira Pennie with seven points and six rebounds. Beth Mahurin posted six points and five rebounds, Tiesha Hampton netted six points and three rebounds, Ted'Ra Taborn collected five points and six rebounds, Taylor Birchfield tossed in four points, Jordan Like contributed three points and three rebounds, Jada Grady added two points and three rebounds and Jazmyn Hardiman had two points and two rebounds.

Blair Stephenson led Lake Land with 16 points and two rebounds, while Candace Niemerg posted 12 points and five rebounds.
