Statesmen outgun Rend Lake, 102-86

One week after a dismal performance that saw them score just 49 points in a two-point home loss, Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team needed less than 20 minutes to surpass that total.

The Statesmen more than doubled their output from their previous game Saturday and rolled past host Rend Lake College, 102-86, to open Great Rivers Athletic Conference play. Rend Lake is the defending NJCAA Division II National Champion and was ranked No. 1 in the country in this year's preseason poll.

Lincoln Trail was in control virtually throughout, as they exploded for 58 first-half points on their way to a 58-42 advantage at halftime. Each team scored 44 points in the second half, allowing the Statesmen to cruise to the victory.

An exceptional night shooting, especially from long range, propelled the Statesmen to victory. Lincoln Trail made 36-62 field goal attempts (58 percent), which included a 24-42 effort from two-point range (57 percent) and a 12-20 performance from three-point range (60 percent). Rend Lake also shot the ball well, but not quite as good as the Statesmen. Rend Lake connected on 30-62 shots from the floor (48 percent), including 21-44 from inside the arc (48 percent) and 9-18 from long distance (50 percent). Lincoln Trail also made 18-30 free throw attempts (60 percent), while Rend Lake was 17-26 from the foul line (65 percent).

Dennis Hightower paced the Statesmen with 26 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three assists and one blocked shot, while Jake Newton posted 18 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Jason Smith netted 17 points and three rebounds, Tyler Alexander totaled 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, Caleb Begle contributed eight points, two assists and one rebound, Jesse Tesmer collected six points, three rebounds and one assist, Jacob Duncan added five points and three assists, John Bootz chipped in with four points, one rebound and one blocked shot, Larry Johnson had two points, one rebound and one assist and Nick Painter had one point, three rebounds and one blocked shot.

Rend Lake put five players in double figures, led by Montez Williams with 18 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Former Flora standout Paul Knapp tossed in 15 points, Cortez Macklin tossed in 12 and Trice Whaley and Devontai Halfacre netted 10 points apiece.
