Sports Editor

Robinson High School's girls' tennis team had a strong finish to their season Saturday, as they finished third in the IHSA Sectional Meet at Casey.

Although the Lady Maroons did not advance anyone to state, each of their four entries won their first matches before being eliminated from the competition.

"That was a great performance for our team at sectionals," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "Although we did not have anyone go to state, it was a great team performance Saturday and throughout the year. We continued to get stronger as the year went on."

Robinson totaled 12 points to finish in a tie with Charleston for third. Mattoon won the meet with 35 points, while Mt. Zion was second with 19. Newton (10), Casey-Westfield (8), Shelbyville (6), Decatur MacArthur (4), Paris (2), Decatur Eisenhower (O) and Decatur St. Teresa (0) rounded out the field.

In singles play, Emily Harp won her first round match over Janessa Watson of Paris, 6-0, 6-0, then lost in the second round to Maegan Flight of Charleston, 0-6, 0-6. Katie Beals also won her first-round match over Decatur Eisenhower's Eloise Publico, 6-0, 6-0, then lost to Newton's Rebeca Mier-y-Leon, 5-7, 2-6.

In doubles play, the team of Sierra Henry and Melissa Jenkins received a first round bye, then won a second-round match over Decatur Eisenhower's Ben and Luttrell by default, before losing in the third round to Crosby and Lebo of Mt. Zion, 0-6, 1-6. Also, Brittney Fuller and Madison Buchanan had a first round bye, then beat Martin and Shockley of Paris 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Shelbyville's Allen and Halbrook in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 2-6.
