Robinson High School's golf team wanted at the very least to advance through the regional round of competition to get a chance to play in the sectional meet on their home course, but they also felt they had a shot to win Tuesday's Class 1A Regional at Effingham Country Club.
The Maroons took care of the first part, while just missing out on the second. Robinson came in second out of eight full teams, coming just four strokes short of champion and host Effingham St. Anthony.
"I was a little disappointed that we didn't win, but pleased with second and qualifying to move on to the Sectional at our place," RHS head coach Terry Roche said.
Robinson posted a team score of 321, while St. Anthony came in just under with a 317. Those two were the class of the field, as the third qualifying team for the sectional - Teutopolis - finished with a score of 360. Rounding out the field were Flora (375), Altamont (377), Lawrenceville (386), Red Hill (393) and Pana (424). Oblong, Cisne, Wayne City and Fairfield also had entrants, but not enough to post a team score.
For the second time in just over a week, Robinson's Tom Goodman tied for first place in a tournament and competed in a playoff for the individual title. At the Little Illini Conference Tournament last week, Goodman tied for first, but lost in a playoff. This time, Goodman came out on top, as he edged out Effingham St. Anthony's Garrett Hixenbaugh on the third playoff hole to earn medalist honors.
Goodman and Hixenbaugh each finished their 18-hole rounds with scores of three-over-par 75. Each player scored pars on the first two playoff holes, while Goodman came through with a birdie on the third, while Hixenbaugh could only manage par.
Goodman shot a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to lead the Maroons, while Alex Brown carded a 37 on the front and a 42 on the back to finish with a 79, which placed him fifth overall. James Gibson shot 38 on the front and 43 on the back for an 81 to place him seventh overall and Tristen Murphy shot 41 on the front and 45 on the back for an 86 that tied him for 16th overall. Rounds of 98 by Hunter Givens (53-45) and 111 from Conner Weber (50-61) were not included in the team score.
Oblong got rounds of 107 (54-53) from Gage Kidwell and 154 (75-79) from Jordan Schroeder, but neither of those scores were good enough to advance.
Other advancing individuals included Flora's John Casolari (76) and Robert Casolari (85), Red Hill's Zach Breault (82) and Jacob Abel (89), Altamont's Griffin Jackman (84) and Adam Mayhaus (87), Cisne's Logan Hosick (84), Wayne City's Nate Caudle (86), Fairfield's Colton Simpson (86) and Lawrenceville's Hoa Bobe (91).
Robinson will not have to travel far for the IHSA Class 1A Sectional, as it will be held on their home course at Quail Creek Country Club in Robinson Monday at 8:30 a.m.
