RHS girls tennis 3rd at Little Illini tourney
| It took an extra day, but the Little Illini Conference Girls Tennis Tournament finally reached its conclusion.|
The tournament began on Saturday, but rain that fell Saturday afternoon caused play to be suspended and completed on Monday.
Robinson High School's entrants in the tournament won more matches than they lost, on their way to a third-place finish in the team standings.
"This was the best performance in the LIC tournament in the seven years (assistant coach) Steve (Jenkins) and I have been involved in the program," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "Everyone contributed to the points we accumulated. It was a great team finish."
The Lady Maroons finished with 15 team points, while Olney won the tournament with 25. Flora was second with 24, Newton was fourth with 11 and Casey-Westfield finish fifth with zero points.
Top finisher for the Lady Maroons was Katie Beals, who placed fourth in the singles bracket.
After receiving a first-round bye, Beals knocked off fourth-ranked Sydney Shan of Olney in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, to win their quarterfinal match. However, Beals would lose her next two matches. In the semifinals, Beals lost to Flora's Bailey Pearce, 3-6, 0-6, then she dropped the third-place match to Flora's Macy Warren, 1-6, 1-6.
Also in singles play, Emily Harp alternated wins and losses in her four matches. She opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Casey-Westfield's Morgan Shaw, but lost to top-seeded Jaclyn Shan of Olney in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 0-6. In the consolation bracket, Harp beat Casey-Westfield's Ashley Sherwood in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, then lost to Newton's Rebeca Mier-y-Leon, 0-6, 2-6.
In doubles play, Robinson's two entries maneuvered through the consolation bracket to reach the fifth-place match. The match was not contested, as the tournament is designed for the two entrants to each earn a half-point for reaching the finals of the consolation bracket.
Madison Buchanan and Brittney Fuller finished their tournament run with a 3-1 record. They opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Newton's Katelyn Michl and Shelby Jackson, then lost to second-seeded Nicole Shan and Audrey Jensen of Olney in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 0-6. In the consolation bracket, Buchanan and Fuller beat Casey-Westfield's Niki Brandenburg and Ellie Tutewiler 6-1, 7-5, then beat Casey-Westfield's Leslie Gladu and Victoria Cox, who retired after trailing 4-2 in the first set.
Meanwhile, Sierra Henry and Melissa Jenkins were seeded fourth in the tournament and received a first-round bye, but then lost their quarterfinal match to Flora's Allison Carder and Morgan Luttrell, 0-6, 0-6. Henry and Jenkins received a bye in the consolation bracket, then beat Newton's Michl and Jackson in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3.
"All of our players played some great tennis," Ireland said. "We are so proud of the growth of the players and the program over the past four years."
Robinson also played a dual match with Paris Monday and won 9-0, but results were not available by press time.
Robinson (5-7) will continue a busy week when they play at Effingham Thursday at 4:15 p.m. The Lady Maroons will then play host to Mt. Zion Saturday at 10 a.m.
