RHS girls tennis falls to Newton, Ttown
| Despite continued strong play recently, Robinson High School's girls' tennis team has not mustered many wins of late.|
The Lady Maroons dropped a pair of matches at home this week, falling to Newton on Monday and Teutopolis on Tuesday.
Against Newton, five of the nine matches went to three sets, but Robinson won only one of them and came out on the short end of a 5-4 score.
"This match could have went either way," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "Newton played a great match and we could not capitalize on some close three-set matches. Our earlier meeting was also very close, only decided by total game score. We have had to make some adjustments due to an injury, so we had players not playing with their regular partners in doubles."
In singles play, Robinson got a win at No. 2, as Madison Buchanan beat Michaela Green in two sets, 7-5, 6-1, while Emily Harp also won in straight sets at No. 6 over Jessica Stork, 6-0, 6-1.
Needing all three doubles matches to get the win, Robinson came up just short. At No. 2, Brittney Fuller and Katie Beals defeated Rebeca Mier-y-Leon in three sets, 6-4. 1-6, 6-2, while Lillie Hargis and Aviana Beckes won at No. 3 over Cynthia Griffith and Shelby Jackson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 1, Sierra Henry and Buchanan fell short in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.
Robinson did win the junior varsity match, 6-3.
Tanieka Stephens, Makayla Hargrave and Reagan Stephens earned singles wins, while the teams of Sarah Rynke and Cierra Knight, Jordan Mikeworth and Mariah Stewart and Shelby Koester and Amy Watts each picked up a win in doubles play.
On Tuesday, Robinson played a few close matches, but lost to Teutopolis 9-0.
"We played very well against a tough T-Town team," Ireland said. "We played them the best we have in the four years I have been coaching. Our players have continued to get stronger throughout the season, but T-Town is one of the toughest teams that we play. We had some long matches at the Nos. 2,3 and 4 spots."
The closest match was at No. 3 singles as Beals lost in three sets to Ashley Hemmen, 2-6. 7-5, 4-6. All other matches were decided in two sets.
Robinson (4-7) will play in the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday at Olney.
