RHS girls tennis edges Casey, 5-4
Sports Editor

A close, competitive match went the way of Robinson High School's girls' tennis team Thursday at Casey-Westfield.

The Lady Maroons were able to win four of six singles matches, then pulled out one more win in doubles to win the match, 5-4.

"We had a very competitive match tonight against Casey," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "The matchup in both singles and doubles was very close. Doubles turned out to be the big test for the evening. We needed one win to clinch the match and we were able to get that at No. 3 doubles."

In singles play, Robinson won at the top four spots, all in straight sets. Sierra Henry won at No. 1 over Leslie Gladu, 6-4, 6-3, while Madison Buchanan won 6-2, 6-3 over Victoria Cox at No. 2. At No. 3, Brittney Fuller downed Niki Brandenburg 6-4, 6-4 and Katie Beals beat Ashley Sherwood at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.

As for doubles, the No. 3 squad of Aviana Beckes and Beals rallied from behind to pull out the win over Sherwood and Morgan Shaw in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Robinson's other two doubles teams - Henry and Melissa Jenkins and Fuller and Buchanan - each lost in three sets.

"Aviana and Katie worked hard and came back from a first-set loss to get the victory," Ireland said. "In the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, we had great rallies and lots of competitive points, but were not able to get a win. There was lots of effort tonight from all our players."

Robinson also got wins from the doubles teams of Brooke Taylor and Reagan Stephens and Sarah Rynke and Lillie Hargis in junior varsity play.
