Robinson girls' tennis team wins match at Newton via tiebreaker
Sports Editor

It wasn't the most conventional way to get a victory, but it was a win nonetheless for Robinson High School's girls' tennis team Tuesday.

The Lady Maroons had a shortened match at Newton due to limited court availability and low and behold when the matches concluded, each team had won three.

Robinson picked up three wins out of the four singles matches, while Newton won both doubles matches in addition to their one singles win.

As a result, a tiebreaker was needed, which was total games won. Robinson held a 71-55 advantage in that category, giving them the match win.

In singles play, Madison Buchanan won at No. 2 for RHS over Newton's Michaela Green, 6-0, 6-2, Brittney Fuller won at No. 3 over Cheyenne Goss, 6-3, 6-4 and Katie Beals beat Delaney Heal at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. In the other doubles match, Sierra Henry lost at No. 1 to Newton's Rebecca Mier-y-Leon in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7.

"Singles action was very strong tonight," Ireland said. "We were very consistent today and shot placement look much better than last week. Madi, Brittany and Katie played very strong tonight. Sierra Henry played a very tactical match against a tough Newton player and just fell short."

Meanwhile, Robinson lost both doubles matches, but they were by narrow margins.

At No. 1, Melissa Jenkins and Lillie Hargis lost to Stacie Purcell and Katelyn Michl, 6-7(7-9), 2-6, while Abbie Blunier and Emily Harp lost at No. 2 to Hannah Loy and Shelby Jackson, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6.

"Melissa and Lillie played a nice first set, but were not able to close it out" Ireland said. "Abbie and Emily played a three-set match, but were could not finish the match out."

Robinson also won all six junior varsity doubles matches.

"Overall we improved tonight with greater concentration in singles and the ladies were able to show that with their scores," Ireland said. "We would like to see more aggression during doubles, as well as improved fundamentals on certain shots."
