It was more of the same for Oblong High School's softball team Saturday.
The Lady Panthers continued to struggle in some areas, which resulted in a pair of losses at the Lady Tiger Softball Classic in Olney.
Oblong opened tournament play with a 6-3 loss to Lawrenceville in a game that also counted in the Little Illini Conference standings due to the teams needing to make up their game against each other, then dropped a 2-1 decision to South Central.
Against Lawrenceville, Oblong trailed 2-1 after the first inning, but scored another run in the second to even the score. Lawrenceville then struck for three runs in the third to take the lead for good, while Oblong plated a run in their half of the third to close the gap to 5-3. Lawrenceville then added a run in the seventh to seal the win.
Michaela Manhart led OHS at the plate with two singles, a run batted in and a run scored, while Kelsie Harper and Cheyenne Wells each posted a base hit and a run scored. Baylee Sparks added two singles, Ashlei Tuel had a base hit and Christy Kirkham had a run batted in.
Tuel suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five runs - three earned - on six hits, while striking out five in four innings. Emily Lockhart tossed the final three frames, giving up an unearned run on one hit, while walking one and striking out four.
In the third-place game, Oblong scored a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead and held that margin until the fifth. South Central struck for a run in the fifth to tie the game, then plated another run in the sixth to take the lead and hung on for the win.
Manhart, Tuel and Lockhart led the offense with two singles apiece, while Sparks and Kayla Musgrave had a single apiece and Kelci Dunlap scored a run.
"We got hits, we just couldn't bunch them together," OHS head coach Galen Slover said. "We hit the ball good and our pitching has been good, but when we make errors, they always end up hurting us."
Sparks took the loss on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, while striking out seven in seven innings.
