Sports Editor

A bit of history was made by Hutsonville-Palestine's baseball team Thursday.

The Tigers used a big first inning to propel them to a 12-4 win over Newton in Little Illini Conference play, which was their first-ever over the Eagles.

Hutsonville-Palestine's baseball program was winless in 27 previous meetings with Newton, including 26 losses and one tie, according to records provided to the Daily News.

The Tigers never trailed after scoring six runs in the top of the first, but Newton stayed close after notching four runs in the bottom of the second. Hutsonville-Palestine plated three more runs in the third to extend their advantage to 9-4, then scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to pull away for the win.

Tyler Heflin led Hutsonville-Palestine at the plate with two singles, four runs batted in and a run scored, while B.J. Ramsey doubled, singled, knocked in a run and scored a run. Logan Wesner posted a base hit and three runs scored, Brandon Ramsey singled and scored twice, Matt Schmidlin added a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored, Kyle Myers and Dallas Cooke each singled and scored a run, Brandon Cofer knocked in a run and scored a run and Cade Fulling scored a run.
