Maroons double up Tigers in 8-4 win
Sports Editor

One big inning was enough to get Robinson High School's baseball team back in the win column Friday night.

The Maroons used a seven-run second inning to take control early, then held on late to beat county rival Hutsonville-Palestine, 8-4, in a rare night contest.

Robinson opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, then exploded for seven runs in the second to take an 8-0 advantage. Hutsonville-Palestine tried to chip away, as they got single runs in the third and fourth to make the score 8-2. The Tigers then scored twice more in the sixth, but they could get no closer.

Landen Hoagland led RHS at the plate with a double, a single and three runs batted in, while Blake Hale singled twice, knocked in a run and scored a run. Brayden Scott posted a double, a single and a run scored, Rex Grissom doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, Michael Elliott singled, drove in a run and scored a run, Logan Johnson added a base hit and two runs scored and Gunther VanWinkle and Bucky Stevens each singled and scored a run.

VanWinkle earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs - two earned - on five hits, while walking seven and striking out 14 in six innings of work. Scott finished up on the mound, striking out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect inning of relief.

Matt Schmidlin led the Hutsonville-Palestine offense with a double and a run batted in, while Kyle Myers and Dallas Cooke had a single and a run scored apiece. B.J. Ramsey added a double, Cole Wesner had a base hit and Brandon Ramsey and Cade Fulling each scored a run.

Tyler Heflin suffered the loss on the mound for Hutsonville-Palestine, giving up six runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one in one and one-third innings. Brandon Ramsey allowed two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in three and two-thirds innings of relief, while B.J. Ramsey walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief.
