Tigers outslug Red Hill for 19-11 win
| Waiting an extra week to play their first game did not seem to affect Hutsonville-Palestine's baseball team.|
The Tigers brought the heavy lumber with them to their season opener in Bridgeport Thursday, pounding out 23 hits as they outslugged host Red Hill, 19-11, in Little Illini Conference play.
"I was pleased with the way we hit tonight," HHS-PHS head coach Tony Ramsey said. "Even most of our outs were hard-hit balls."
Runs came fast and furious for both teams, with seven runs scored in the first inning alone. Hutsonville-Palestine opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, courtesy of a three-run home run by Matt Schmidlin. However, Red Hill countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Hutsonville-Palestine tied the game with a run in the top of the second, but Red Hill came back with two in their half to take a 6-4 lead. The Tigers then erupted for eight runs in the third inning to take a 12-6 lead and they never trailed again. After Red Hill scored once in the fourth, Hutsonville-Palestine added three more in the fifth to stretch the lead to 15-7. Red Hill closed the gap to 15-11 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Hutsonville-Palestine tacked on two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull away for the win.
Schmidlin paced Hutsonville-Palestine at the plate with a home run, three singles, five runs batted in and three runs scored, while Brandon Ramsey doubled twice, singled twice and scored four runs. B.J. Ramsey posted three hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored, Dallas Cooke doubled twice, singled, drove in four runs and scored two runs, Brandon Cofer added two singles, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Kyle Myers singled three times, drove in two runs and scored a run, Tyler Heflin had two hits and two runs scored, Cade Fulling singled, knocked in two runs and scored a run and Cole Wesner singled and scored a run.
Cooke earned the win on the mound in relief, giving up five runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings, while walking three and striking out five. Heflin started for the Tigers and went one and one-third innings, allowing six runs on three hits, while walking five and striking out one.
